W06 Reflection: Entrepreneurial Journal

 

This week I learned about the importance of getting your priorities straight. In the videos they talked about how when you run a business you will be extremely busy. If you do not set rules for yourself, it can and will have an effect on your family and personal life. A lot of entrepreneurs work long hours and don’t even realize that it is affecting the other aspects of their life. A tip that was shared in the videos was that you should set rules for yourself and your business. An example that was shared was that he promised himself and his family that he would be home for dinner every night at 7:00. He stuck to it and that helped him to maintain a good relationship with his wife and kids. He also mentioned that there were a lot of nights that he would stay up very late after dinner to finish up the things that he had to miss to be there. If you decide to be an entrepreneur, you will have to sacrifice some things that you might not want to give up. It was mentioned in the videos that there will always be time to do the fun things and to do your hobbies. But you need to make sure that the important things are taken care of first. It is very important to not be too busy to do things like take a calling at church. It was also mentioned that you should know that if you are doing very well and making lots of money, God wants you to still do things like home teaching and callings. It is important to him to that we are contributing the building of Zion. If we spend all of our focus on making money, we will be spending less time building Zion

 I think that Randy Pausch was able to achieve so many of his childhood dreams because he saw a brick wall as an opportunity to show how bad he wanted something. This mindset helped him to achieve so many of his goals because he decided that he would find a way around, above, or through that wall. Brick walls are there to stop people that don't want it as much as others. He quoted "If you lead your life the right way, the karma will take care of itself and the dreams will come to you." I think that this quote is important because a lot of people will do anything for success. And yes, a lot of them will be successful, but I don't think that it will be fulfilling to them.  I think that dreaming is such an important aspect that should forever be a part of our lives. If we don't dream, we won't have goals. Dreaming is like a shimmer of light in a world that can be a very dark place. If we do not have goals and dreams, we wouldn't have successful people in life

W09 Reflection: Entrepreneurial Journal

  The biggest thing that stuck out to me this week was Guy Kawaski’s talk. He talked about trust. I think that trust is something that has kind of gone down the drain in these last few years. I think that it becomes harder and harder to trust people every day, but I do think that there are still trustworthy people out there. He talked about the importance of trust when you are running a business. He gave examples of Amazon, Zappos, Nordstrom, and some others. I think that it is definitely an interesting concept. He talked about how people can take advantage of these companies, but they usually don’t. For example, Amazon allows you to return things like books. He said that just about anybody can read a book and return it within the allotted time, but people don’t. Amazon goes out on a limb to trust people and in turn, people trust Amazon.
